A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics

Students can follow A Level courses in Mathematics (1 A level) or Mathematics with Further Mathematics (2 A levels). The students follow the Edexcel A Level specification for Maths (9MA0) and for Further Maths (9FM0), which includes further Mechanics and Decision as the option assessment objectives. These are both linear courses in which all content is assessed at the end of the course.

The students will be monitored throughout the course. They will complete a number of progress assessments which will be used to track their progress. The mathematics staff run support classes and drop-in sessions to provide additional help for the students.

We give the students the opportunity to participate in the UKMT Maths Challenge each year. Some students also represent the school in the UKMT Team Challenges.

Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths)

In addition to the A levels in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, we also offer the AQA Level 3 qualification in Mathematical Studies (also known as Core Maths). The course is taken in Year 12 only and is equivalent to an AS Level.

Core Maths takes the mathematical knowledge from GCSE and builds upon it to apply these skills to real world problems. For example, we cover tax and national insurance, loans, budgeting and more advanced statistical techniques that are not met at GCSE such as using a standard deviation, modelling with a normal distribution, and correlation/regression.
